If you want to maintain a healthy mouth and a healthy body, it is vital that you take care of your gums. The pink tissue that holds your teeth in place is more than just an accessory for your smile. If it becomes infected or inflamed, you could end up suffering from chronic bad breath, tooth loss, and even systemic health problems. An excellent oral hygiene routine is essential for protecting your gum health, but we encourage you to supplement your brushing and flossing with a diet that is full of gum-friendly goodies.
Onions
Onions are notorious for causing bad breath, but they’re actually great for your oral health! They contain compounds that help to fight off the bacteria that causes inflammation and gum disease. Try incorporating more onions into your diet by putting a few slices on your salad or adding them into your stir-fry.
Green Tea
Green tea is one of the healthiest drinks on the planet. Research indicates that it may be useful for promoting healthy skin, preventing cancer, and, yes, boosting gum health. It contains antioxidants known as catechins, which fight one of the types of bacteria that can lead to gum disease. Try drinking a cup or two every day (without added sugar, of course). If regular green tea doesn’t taste good to you, you might try to find one that is infused with other flavors, such as raspberry or jasmine.
Crunchy Fruits and Veggies
Apples, carrots, and celery all take some effort to chew thoroughly, but that is a good thing! All of that chewing action encourages saliva production, which helps to wash away harmful, gum-damaging bacteria. Furthermore, the hard bits of these foods can remove some of the plaque and bacteria your teeth’s surfaces, particularly near the gum line.
Leafy Greens
Leafy greens, such as kale and spinach, are chock-full of healthy vitamins and minerals. One of the best things about them is that they contain vitamin C, which helps to boost red blood cell production and reduce inflammation. Also, because they aren’t nearly as acidic as other sources of vitamin C (like citrus fruits), they won’t weaken your tooth enamel.
Dairy Products
It’s common knowledge that milk, cheese, and yogurt are good for your teeth because they’re rich in calcium. But these foods are also good for your gums! The majority of dairy products contain a protein called casein, which helps to neutralize harmful acids in the mouth that might otherwise lead to gum irritation.
Your diet plays a big role in your oral health! To achieve a smile that is as healthy as possible, try adding the above foods into your daily menu.
