Do you need to prepare for pain in regard to a dental crown? Well, when you consider all of the ways it can help your tooth, it might be more painful to avoid getting one.
A dental crown has both cosmetic and restorative benefits. Keep reading to find out why you would want to get a crown, what the process is like, and then what you need to know for recovery and daily care.
What Are the Reasons to Get a Dental Crown?
Your tooth could be in a variety of adverse situations where a dental crown would be just what the doctor – or in this case, dentist – ordered:
- Protect a damaged or decayed tooth
- Cover a tooth that has a surface area mostly made of dental filling
- Secure a dental bridge
- Cover a discolored or misshapen tooth
- Attach a restoration to a dental implant
- Protect a tooth that underwent root canal therapy
What Will Be Done if I Decide to Get a Dental Crown?
Thanks to the CEREC system which combines computer-aided design and manufacturing, as well as an in-office milling machine, the process for getting a dental crown requires only one visit lasting about 90 minutes.
Your dentist can give you an anesthetic, so don’t worry about potentially experiencing some sensitivity during the procedure. Your tooth will be examined and prepped for a crown as any decay is removed.
Then, digital images are captured and recreated using advanced CEREC software. Instead of traditional bite-down impressions that can be messy and uncomfortable, digital impressions are used, which provide results that are faster, painless, and more accurate.
With the 3D model of your tooth on the screen, your dentist creates a blueprint for your new crown. That information is sent to an in-house milling machine and your restoration is manufactured within minutes from a single block of dental porcelain.
What Can I Expect After I Get a Dental Crown?
There could be some irritation or inflammation from when the crown was applied, but the actual recovery process is short. The tooth may feel strange at first since it probably has a slightly different shape than it did before the crown, but you’ll get used to it after a few days. If you don’t, the dentist can examine it at a follow-up visit and make needed adjustments.
How Do I Take Care of My Dental Crown?
When treated properly, your CEREC crown can be expected to last for many years. Brush, floss, and visit your dentist regularly as you normally would. Play it safe and avoid biting items like hard candy, ice, and other things you’d normally be cautious with to protect your investment.
Dental crowns offer a long lifespan, durability, and a lifelike appearance. If the tooth in question is in bad shape, you are probably already dealing with pain and shouldn’t worry about potential discomfort of a crown procedure. With the many ways a crown can boost a tooth’s functional ability, it makes sense to ask your dentist if it’s the right treatment for you.
