How CEREC® Works
The CEREC system combines computer-aided design, computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) technology, and a milling machine we have in the MoreSMILES Dental Spa office. The process for a one-visit crown takes around an hour and a half from start to finish.
First, your dentist removes any decay from your affected tooth. Then, digital images are captured and recreated using advanced CEREC software. With the 3D model of your tooth on screen, your dentist creates a blueprint for your new crown. This information is sent to our in-house milling machine, where your restoration is manufactured within minutes from a single block of dental porcelain.
Why You Might Need a Dental Crown
A dental crown is a tooth-shaped covering that is bonded securely over a damaged or severely decayed tooth. The crown can also be used in tooth replacement, either supported by a dental implant or as part of a fixed dental bridge. Dental crowns are commonly used to:
- Hold together a broken tooth
- Restore severe decay or damage
- Repair a malfunctioning filling
- Make cosmetic improvements to severely flawed front teeth
- Complete root canal therapy
- Replace one or more teeth
You and Dr. Moreau or Dr. Doyle will thoroughly discuss your treatment plan to ensure you are fully informed as to why a one-visit dental crown is the best solution for your smile.
Benefits of CEREC®
The traditional method for a dental crown requires two visits to your dentist’s office with a span of two weeks in between. A temporary restoration is worn during visits -- a flimsy crown that is likely to break or malfunction. With CEREC, there is no need to take any extra time off work or worry about a temporary restoration. Your sturdy, beautiful crown is ready in just one visit to your dentist in Covington.
And thanks to digital impressions, preparing for your dental crown has never been easier. Traditional bite-down impressions are messy and uncomfortable -- but capturing digital images is fast and simple. The results are also more accurate, leading to better treatment planning.
Dental porcelain offers several cosmetic advantages, too. The material is highly customizable to ensure that it matches the shade of the surrounding teeth flawlessly. Porcelain reflects light just like your natural tooth enamel, so no one will be able to tell a difference between your restored tooth and those surrounding it.
When cared for properly, your CEREC crown can be expected to last for many years, or just as long as one that is prepared using the traditional method. Continue to brush, floss, and visit your dentist regularly to maintain proper oral health.
